Thief of Souls by Brian Klingborg

The brutal murder of a young woman in a rural village in Northern China sends shockwaves all the way to Beijing.  Not much ever happens in Raven Valley, but that changes when a dead body is discovered.  Deputy police chief Lu Fei leads a quiet investigation into the murder and as he digs deeper into the gruesome murder, he finds himself facing old enemies and creating new ones in the form of local Communist Party bosses and corrupt business interests. Despite these rising obstacles, Lu remains determined to find the real killer, especially after he links the murder to other unsolved homicides. But the closer he gets to the heart of the mystery, the more he puts himself and his loved ones in danger.

No Monday Mysteries Book Club in December.

Because there is no meeting in December, book club members will read the first and last novels in the Mrs. Pollifax series and compare the writing style, characters, etc. for January's meeting.

The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman

and

Mrs. Pollifax Unveiled by Dorothy Gilman

In the first book we meet Mrs. Virgil (Emily) Pollifax of New Brunswick, New Jersey, a widowwith grown, married children. She is tired of attending her Garden Club meetings and wants to do something good for her country.  So, naturally, she becomes a CIA agent. She akes on a “job” in Mexico City. The assignment doesn’t sound dangerous at first, but then, as often happens, something goes wrong. Now our dear Mrs. Pollifax finds herself embroiled in quite a hot Cold War—and her country’s enemies find themselves entangled with one unbelievably feisty lady.

In the final book of the series we find Mrs. Pollifax masquerading as the worried aunt of a young American woman who faced down hijackers on a flight to the Middle East, saved the lives of the passengers on board, stepped off the plane in Damascus in a blaze of celebrity and then disappeared. The CIA believes Amanda Pym was kidnapped, possibly murdered.  Mrs. Pollifax begins her determined search, slipping through Damascus’s crooked streets and crowded souks . . . and trekking deep into the desert. Yet she is shadowed by deadly enemies, whose sinister agenda threatens not only Mrs. P. but the fragile stability of the entire Middle East. Only a miracle—or a brilliant counterplot—can forestall a disaster that will send shock waves around the world.

But her investigation is about to place those closest to her—her best friend and her own daughter—in mortal danger…As the bodies begin to pile up, can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer, before it's too late?
